Dear Governor-Elect Christie,

I wanted to write to you to thank you for your support of vaccine rights in the state of NJ.

Understanding that we live in a state where pharma plays an enormous role in our economics, there is no coincidence that New Jersey mandates the highest number of vaccines for school-age children than any other state.

You have stood with parents on this issue during your campaign, and by doing so, you have done a very brave thing.  But by electing you as our advocate, our fight for vaccine rights is not over.

I think the most important issue is that vaccines must be formulated in a safe fashion (i.e., no mercury, aluminum and other neurotoxins, preservatives or other unsafe additives – the right version of “safe” as opposed to the pharma version of safe. If vaccines are so safe, then why did Baxter, et al, need to be given full immunity when formulating the H1N1 vaccine?). If the pharma industry does not want to talk at that level, then it should be the unmitigated right of the parents to protect our children from harm. What are they so afraid of? Why isn’t there a conscientious objection right to abstain from vaccination?

Truth be told, I did not vote for you  - not because I have any great love for either of your competitors, but because I’m not sure I believe you can keep your promises to this important and hard working parental rights group. Prove me wrong and you’ll get my vote next time around.

We’ll be watching closely on this and a number of other issues.

Sincerely,

Laurie Brekke

                   Quote of the week

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

- C. S. Lewis (1898-1963)
