A comparison of thirty developed countries A closer look at Japan How do unvaccinated populations fare? Where are the studies? A Comparison of Thirty Developed CountriesThere is no country in the world that vaccinates more than the United States. After Congress granted liability protection to vaccine makers in the late 1980s, government began ramping up the number of shots on the recommended schedule. Most of our 1st world peers did not follow suit. ![]() Autism and Vaccines Around the World, Generation Rescue, April 2009 Read the Generation Rescue report to find out more about vaccine schedules, autism rates and Under 5 Mortality in the Western world. The United States has the highest number of mandated vaccines for children under 5 in the world, the highest rate of autism in the world, and has the highest infant mortality of nearly all our peers. If you're confused by Generation Rescue's vaccine count, let me explain the discrepancy. DPT and MMR are combination vaccines. These shots contains three vaccines each. The CDC recommends that children get five DPT vaccines and two MMR vaccines by age five. Generation Rescue would post that tally as five DPT plus two MMR or seven total shots. I believe it's appropriate to add five DPT (five times three different vaccines) plus two MMR (two times three different vaccines) equals a total of 21. A Closer Look At JapanIt's instructive to observe how different countries handle vaccine injuries. The story of the DPT vaccine in our country has not been a happy one. The whole cell version of the vaccine was so reactogenic that nearly three-quarters of all injury claims in the first decade of the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program were related to this combination shot. In Japan, after two babies died of the vaccine in 1975, the Japanese government responded with several dramatic measures. First, they removed the pertussis component from the vaccine. Second, they raised the minimum vaccination age from three months to 24 months of age. When they did this, SIDS virtually disappeared and Japan skyrocketed to the top of the chart with the lowest infant mortality in the world. And finally, Japan immediately set about inventing a safer pertussis vaccine which they successfully introduced to the market in 1981. As a side note, it took the United States 15 years to adopt this safer acellular pertussis formulation. We did not add aP to the schedule until 1996. ![]() it is also interesting to note that Japan started relaxing vaccination laws in 1987 and fully repealed mandatory vaccination in 1994. The Japanese stopped using the combination MMR vaccine in 1993. And although they lowered the minimum vaccination age to three months in 1995, Japanese babies only receive 14 vaccines by two years of age compared with American babies who get 33 vaccines by age 15 months. When it comes to health, Japan is a country whose results are worth emulating. They dramatically outperform us in infant mortality, under five mortality and longevity. They're a civilized, educated, progressive and preventively-oriented society. Might we learn something from their example? How Do Unvaccinated Populations Fare?Anecdotally, unvaccinated children appear to be healthier. It's true that anecdotes don't prove anything . They are also not very satisfying to all of us who desire large, longitudinal, controlled studies comparing the vaccinated to the unvaccinated. But the studies have never been done... so anecdotes, small studies and epidemiology are all we have. Let's review a couple of good examples. First, there's Homefirst Health Services with three locations in northeastern Illinois. Specializing in home births, Dr. Mayer Eisenstein and Homefirst have been caring for tens of thousands of babies and families for nearly four decades. The vast majority of his practice is unvaccinated. Homefirst has no children with autism and significantly less asthma and diabetes compared to national rates. Dr. Eisenstein's open offer to the public health and medical communities to examine his patient records has fallen on deaf ears. No one seems very interested, with the possible exception of a health insurer who wanted to know why his patients didn't file claims. And former UPI reporter, Dan Olmsted who published this piece in 2005 - The Age of Autism: 'A Pretty Big Secret.' Indeed. Mayer follows in the deep and impressive footsteps of his mentor Dr. Robert Mendelsohn the iconic pediatrician who helped parents trust their instincts. Second, there's the Amish of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Amish don't take drugs, they don't vaccinate and they have virtually no autism... just three or four children who were either vaccinated before entering the community or lived downwind of a coal-fired power plant. If we apply the national autism incidence to this small population, there should be at least 130. Seems Dan Olmsted is the only one poking around here, too: The Age of Autism: The Amish anomaly and Mercury and the Amish. When the former head of the CDC, Dr. Julie Gerberding was told about the Amish, she said there was something special about them that they don't have autism. She called it "genetic connectivity." And she declined to investigate. Where Are The Studies?A devastating childhood disorder, affecting hundreds of thousands of children at ever increasing rates. A possible link to vaccines. And still, no inquiry. This holds true for the group of five thousand families that comprise the Omnibus Autism Proceeding of "Vaccine Court." Five thousand families who have met stringent hurdles including attorney representation and the compilation of extensive medical records documenting their children's injuries. No inquiry. The radio silence speaks volumes. The studies that our public health officials hold up as evidence of no casual link between vaccines and neurodevelopmental damage are quite plainly and shamefully inadequate. We should be embarrassed to hold them up as the best justification that a country of our stature and standards can muster. More of us would be appalled if we bothered to read them in the first place. When I say read, I mean read the original studies. Not the CDC's interpretation of the studies. Not the media's reliance upon the CDC's press release. Please take a good, hard look at www.14studies.org. Our country does not investigate. There have been no well-designed, controlled studies, even after many decades of mass vaccinating our babies and children. I'll say it again because it bears repeating. America has never performed double-blind, placebo-controlled studies comparing the total health outcomes of vaccinated children compared to their unvaccinated peers. Will this year's version of the legislation that perennially languishes in Congress finally prevail? Will you contact your elected officials and ask them to support this bill? Until we make it clear that we demand this research, it will not be done.

"It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." - Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968) |
